The second Shanghai eArts Festival, Shanghai’s international festival dedicated to digital art, will take place from 18 to 23 October 2008. This festival has become one of the major cultural events in Shanghai and will be repeated every year until 2010, when the “SHANGHAI 2010” World Exposition takes place .
The event creates new cultural and urban topographies by establishing a dialogue between Chinese digital artists and a selection of international artists working on the theme of the “Urbanized Landscape”.
The Visual System and Jean-Luc Lagardère Foundation’s contribution to the eArts Festival 2008 is supported by CulturesFrance, and centred around two projects: An artists’ residence and a video game project
The Artists’ Residence provides young European digital artists with the opportunity to come to Shanghai for a month to create work that will then be presented to the public at the festival.
4 artists are part of the 2008 programme for Visual System: Joanie Lemercier (AntiVj - RU), Valère Terrier (Factoid – FR), Djeff Regottaz (DekalkoStudio - FR) and Olivier Pasquet (IRCAM - FR)
The Video Game project aims to offer a multi-player game where the action takes place in a town.
In this framework Dr Chen Yan, a specialist in ubiquitous multi-player video games, will offer a larger version of the traditional Chinese game GO.

Alongside its creative contribution, Visual System would like to show the festival from the inside. The association will begin a video blog with this in mind on 25 September.
Visual System hopes to share the design and implementation phase of their programme. The blog will particularly follow the participants through the complexities of the Shanghai electronics market and will witness the different phases as the projects are completed.
After this Visual System will invite the other participants in the festival to add their thoughts to the blog. The camera will then turn to artists from digital art institutions such as ZKM (Germany), Ars Electronica (Austria) or even the MIT Lab (USA).
Visual System hopes to offer everybody, connoisseurs or not, a window on an art undergoing constant change, to better understand who these artists are and the artistic, technical and technological directions that they are taking today.
